Background: Only around 50% of pregnant women get screened for their gestational diabetes (GDM). While screening tests for GDM are simple and effective, many women find the standard blood test cumbersome and invasive. The need for rapid and minimally invasive diagnostic tests for common conditions such as GDM has emerged in response to the growing prevalence of disease and the need to make medical decisions based on specific diagnostic information. The market for these tests is vast, and while expensive, rapid tests may result in better patient outcomes by allowing for earlier interventions and treatment. Methods: We developed a rapid test for pregnancy biomarkers that operates on a microfluidic platform, and validated the test’s performance against the standard GCT. Results: The microfluidic platform permitted assay development and optimization with regard to sample volume, run time, and test performance. We demonstrated a standard GCT result of 8 mmol/L glucose in less than 5 minutes, with excellent accuracy. The test does not require any additional equipment beyond what is found on a standard benchtop instrument. Conclusions: A microfluidic platform to conduct rapid, minimally invasive, and accurate diagnostic tests can be an effective strategy to meet the challenge of limited resources and the need for rapid, real-time results.
