The K-Drama That Made Us Fall in Love with Family Dramas

Back in 2017, we remember feeling bored and tired of watching romance K-dramas. One day, we decided to do something different. Instead of clicking on another new romance drama, we chose a family K-drama. Of course, it was about family, but at the time, we weren’t really aware that this genre even existed. We clicked on the title and read the synopsis, though we honestly can’t remember what it said. What we do remember is that from the very first episode, we were completely hooked.
Why We Chose the Family K-Drama Genre
As we mentioned earlier, we grew tired of watching the usual 16 to 20-episode romance K-dramas that all seemed to follow the same pattern—boy meets girl, they develop feelings, obstacles get in the way, and in the end, they find their way back to each other. It started to feel repetitive, and we craved something different.
We wanted more than just another love story. We wanted a drama that could inspire us, something that would make us reflect on life, family, and relationships beyond just romance. We were looking for a story that would touch our hearts in a deeper way—not just by making us swoon over a love story but by showing us the beauty of life itself.
Our First Pick of a Family K-Drama
While we were looking for a K-drama to watch, one title immediately caught our attention—My Father is Strange. The title alone was intriguing, and that was enough to draw us in. We didn’t even need to read much of the synopsis to be convinced. Sometimes, a great title is all it takes to spark curiosity, and in this case, it worked for us.

At that time (2017), My Father is Strange was only on its fourth episode, but that didn’t bother us at all. We actually enjoy watching ongoing K-dramas and are perfectly fine with just two episodes per week. Unlike those die-hard fans who binge-watch an entire drama overnight (okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration, but you get what we mean), we prefer to savor the experience.
Now, about My Father is Strange—this drama is absolutely amazing! One of the things that drew us in was how hilarious it was. We love comedy, we love humor, and we enjoy a good laugh. It was so refreshing to see family bonding—parents and children, siblings, and even moments in the kitchen where they cooked and shared meals together. We just love scenes where characters cook and eat delicious food. Yay!
What really resonated with us the most was the sibling dynamics. If you have both male and female siblings, this drama is incredibly relatable. The children were all grown up, living different lives, and had distinct personalities. It was funny how we could even match our own siblings to certain characters in the show.
For example, we have an older sister who hates it when people touch her things without permission. In the drama, there was also a big sister just like that, and the way she got back at her younger sister was absolutely hilarious. Let’s be honest—we all probably have that one sibling who just can’t keep their hands to themselves!
Family K-Dramas Have an All-in-One Factor
The best thing about family K-dramas is that they have a little bit of everything. My Father is Strange wasn’t just about why the father was “strange.” He actually had a lifelong secret that only he and his wife knew about, keeping it hidden from their children. But beyond that mystery, the drama also beautifully explored the individual stories of the four siblings, which we really enjoyed.
Each sibling had their own unique love story, and that’s what made the romance aspect of the drama so interesting. Every relationship was different, bringing in a mix of emotions, conflicts, and heartfelt moments.

The eldest sister, a lawyer, had to face an ex-boyfriend she had dumped years ago. He had resented her ever since, and when they met again at a college reunion, both were still single. But as it turned out, their breakup wasn’t as simple as it seemed—there were two sides to the story.

The eldest brother was unemployed and had failed the civil service exam multiple times. While helping out with the family restaurant, he was preparing to take the exam again. However, things got complicated when his girlfriend unexpectedly got pregnant, throwing him into a new set of challenges.

The middle sister, in her early 30s and jobless, struggled to find work until she finally landed a job as a manager for an idol-turned-actor. What she didn’t expect was that this idol would turn out to be her half-brother. And the more time they spent together, the more complicated their feelings became—leading to a forbidden romance.

Then there was the youngest sister—the mischievous one. She was nosy, always sensing when something was off, and had a habit of borrowing her older sister’s things without permission. Materialistic and bold, she worked as a yoga instructor and later found herself drawn to a mysterious, handsome colleague.
And that’s just the tip of the iceberg! There’s so much more to this drama, but we wouldn’t want to spoil everything for you. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s definitely worth watching!
Why is the Title My Father is Strange?
So, why is the father "strange"? As we mentioned earlier, he had been keeping a secret from his children—one that only he and his wife knew.
The truth was that he had been living under someone else’s identity. Years ago, he survived a tragic fire at a club, but his friend didn’t make it. A nurse mistakenly identified him as his deceased friend, and instead of correcting her, he went along with it. Why did he do it? Now, back to the story—turns out, the father’s late friend had a son. And that son was none other than the idol-turned-actor we mentioned earlier. He had returned to Korea to search for his father, but not out of love—he despised him for abandoning him and his mother.
Things got even more complicated when the idol fell in love with the father’s middle child, his road manager. It was a forbidden romance, and both of them tried to deny their feelings for as long as they could. But as the story unfolded, their relationship became one of the most captivating parts of the drama. In fact, many fans considered their love story the highlight of the show.
And with that, we’ll stop here—haha! If you’re curious to know more, check out the video above for all the details!
